Brush up on your core subjects.

Since engineering syllabi across the globe begin with a strong emphasis on mathematics and physics, it is best to revise and learn beyond your current level during your pre-admission period.

•Mathematics: All types of Algebra, Trigonometry, Functions, Basic Calculus (with focus on Limits, Derivatives, Integration), Matrices & Determinants (as they are covered in the very first week of linear algebra and computer science courses).

Physics: In this, you should know Mechanics (forces, motion, energy), Basic Electricity & Magnetism, Unit Conversion, and daily problem solving involving multiple steps.

•Learning habits: Time management of problems, taking notes in your own language, and error logging.

Even 30–60 minutes of revision per day will help you a great deal.

Learning basic programming and digital skills

Today almost all branches of engineering require some programming knowledge, and you should gain an advantage by starting now and learning the basics of one programming language (either Python, which is easy to pick up, or C/C++, which most engineering streams teach) and Variables, loops, conditionals, functions, and I/O operations.

Practice solving some really simple programming questions from any platform like HackerRank, LeetCode (for beginners), or CodeChef, and learn to use the basic tools that you need, namely, a code editor (e.g., VS Code), a version control system (Git/GitHub), and how to Google for solutions to the error.

Documentation, finances, and logistical preparations

Preparation in terms of administration will smooth out your first few weeks in college.

• Compile attested copies of all required documentation: marksheets of Class 10 and 12, transfer/migration certificate, character certificate, scorecard of the entrance exam, allotment letter, certificate of category/income, Aadhaar, and photographs and In case you are changing cities, research the hostels, the transportation and security available to you, and talk to students who study there.

Develop soft skills and a growth mindset.

Engineering requires as much communication and collaboration as the rote memorization of formulas in mathematics and physics.

• Practice communicating – writing and speaking: summarizing the articles you have read, explaining concepts to others, making audio/video recordings.

• Learn to write professional emails and make introductions – you will be doing so constantly with your professors and classmates.

• Read one non-fiction or technological book/article every week to change your reading habits beyond the syllabus.

Approach this transition with interest and without fear – being intimidated is normal, but consistent efforts and early help will go a long way.
